La Calavera

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of the day of the dead, the sugar skull adorns the ofrendas that are central to this holiday. These treats are are always bright and lively, to show there is nothing sad or frightening about the day.  They are decorated with icing, sequins and foils, and given as gifts both to the living and the dead.  The name of the recipient is sometimes written across the forehead, as a sign of tribute and respect, the sentiment being "you are so well loved you will be remembered long after you're gone".
