La Mariposa

Each year around the beginning of November, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the Oyamel forests in the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico. Scientists don’t know why this happens, but the locals believe it is the souls of the departed, mysteriously returning every year around the Day of the Dead. It’s this link to Mexican tradition that moved us to make the Monarch butterfly "La Mariposa" the subject for one of our Loteria images.
